Bernarda Pera knocks off top-seeded Anett Kontaveit to win Hamburg title

HAMBURG, Germany — American Bernarda Pera surprised top-seeded Anett Kontaveit 6-2, 6-Four to win the Hamburg European Open on Saturday for her second title in seven days.

The 81st-ranked Pera, who gained her first WTA title in Budapest final week, saved three of the 4 break factors she confronted and took 4 of the six she created to beat Kontaveit, the world No. 2.

It was Pera’s 12th straight victory going again to the Budapest qualifiers after shedding her earlier 5 matches. The 27-year-old Pera defeated Aleksandra Krunic of Serbia within the Budapest remaining Sunday.
